Karwar is the administrative headquarters of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka India. It is a seaside town situated on the banks of the Kali river which is on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. The town lies about 15 kilometers south of the Karnataka - Goa border and 520 km north-west of Bangalore. The town is sandwiched between the sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. It is rich in flora and fauna.
Konkani is spoken as a local language in Karwar. Kannada, being the state language is also widely spoken. Marathi is widely understood in Karwar due to the prevalence of Marathi literature and arts in the area. Hindi, Urdu and English are also used in social communication.
ಕಾರವಾರ ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಒಂದು ತಾಲೂಕು ಮತ್ತು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ. ಕಾರವಾರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಗೋವಾ ಗಡಿಯಿಂದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಮಾರು 15 ಕಿಲೋ ಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು, ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರದಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನಗರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಾರವಾರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 520 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ವಾಯುವ್ಯ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಕಡಲ ಕಿನಾರೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ನಗರವು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ತಾಣವೂ ಹೌದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಡಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಇರುವ ಪುರಾಣ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳು, ಚಿಕ್ಕ, ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳು, ಹತ್ತಾರು ಸುಂದರ ಕಡಲ ಕಿನಾರೆಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕೈಬೀಸಿ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸುಂದರ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ವಾತಾವರಣ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕವಿ ಶ್ರೀ ರವೀಂದ್ರ ನಾಥ್ ಠಾಕೂರ್ ರವರ ಮೊದಲ ಕೃತಿ ರಚನೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಯಿತು.
